Role and Work

The role of the Senate is to connect the University with the community. The link between the two is viewed as central to the effectiveness of the University. Open communication between the University and the community is achieved through the Senate's reaching out to the community and receiving input from the community. Issues and concerns about post-secondary education in Alberta may be debated through a forum set up by the Senate. The Senate is empowered to commission reports from any part of the University and it may also consider reports coming from any sector of the community.

According to Section 13 of the Post-Secondary Learning Act, “It is the duty of a senate to inquire into any matter that might benefit the university and enhance its position in the community”. Composed of community leaders, today’s Senate pools its wisdom to provide an objective conscience for the University. It examines issues and provides thoughtful advice. When there are achievements to be celebrated, the Senate recognizes excellence and promotes the traditions of the University.

The President of the University reports and makes recommendations annually to the Senate on the progress and requirements of the University's academic work.
