Forestry at the Fore

Dr A.W. Henry

It was not until 1971 that the Faculty of Agriculture added a forestry program. The following year, the Faculty of Agriculture changed its name to the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.

Formed in 1970, the Department of Forest Science offered courses leading to a BSc (Forestry) as well as to graduate degrees in forest science. Former chair Bruce Dancik once said he believed the Department's relative youth gave it a different character from those of some of the longer established schools where the emphasis is overwhelmingly on fibre production, reflecting their close ties to the forest industry.

"We don't see the forest as being just there to feed the mill," said Dancik, explaining that, because of the era in which the department was established, it was able to begin with a fresh outlook, one which focused on multiple uses for the forest. Among his colleagues are professors with expertise in wildland recreation, wildlife habitat, and protected area management.

In 1994, the Department of Forest Science merged with the Department of Soil Science to form the Department of Renewable Resources.
