Banff School of Management

The Banff School of Advanced Management was founded in 1952 at the home of the Banff School of the Arts. The two six-week programs were co-sponsored by the universities of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. In 1954, the Banff School opened its own autonomous School of Management, though the School of Advanced Management remained affiliated with Banff until it closed down in 2001.

The Banff School of the Arts came under the trusteeship of the University of Calgary in 1970; that year, it changed its name to the Banff Centre for Continuing Education. The School of Management, along with the School of Fine Arts and the Conference Division, was a part of the Banff Centre.

The Leadership Development component has grown out of the Banff School of Management and today offers new ways to approach leadership. This program applies unique and innovative approaches in its supportive atmosphere to foster the use of new methodologies and creative thinking among course participants.

The Leadership Development program involves customizing courses for the Aboriginal, arts, corporate, government, and non-profit sectors. Students are mid- to senior-level managers, leaders, and decision-makers who come away from their experience at the Banff Centre as transformed leaders who pilot our institutions, governments, corporations, and arts.

Courses have been offered off-campus too. In 1987, the School of Management held an international workshop in Kingston, Jamaica.

The National Advisory Committee, which has been advising The Banff Centre since 1983, is comprised of the president and CEO of The Banff Centre, a member nominated by the federal government under the National Parks Act, a chairman, five members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, and nine other members appointed by these previously appointed members.

In 2004, the Alberta Government announced it would provide $20 million for a campus upgrade. Construction is ongoing to accommodate an international community of managers and leaders who come to Banff to participate in the Centre’s superb programs.

More information about leadership development at The Banff Centre is available through the Centre's website.
