China Institute

The China Institute at the University of Alberta (CIUA) was established in the fall of 2005. The Government of Alberta gave an endowment of $37 million to the Institute to match the appraised value of the Mactaggart Art Collection which was donated to the University of Alberta Museums by Sandy and Cécile Mactaggart.

The China Institute aims to promote China-related initiatives and scholarship at the University of Alberta and to support new teaching and research activities between Canada and China. The China Institute also hopes to develop a strong friendship with China and to promote cultural, scientific, and business exchanges.

The CIUA will be the umbrella organization for all China-related activities at the University of Alberta. It will support China-related teaching and research work at the University of Alberta, involving undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, staff, and faculty. The China Institute's vision is to become recognized as a unique Canadian enterprise that stimulates outstanding China-related teaching and research initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration. The work being done at the Institute will involve scholars from all disciplines and the Institute will forge links between the University and the broader community in order to encourage cultural understanding and scientific and business ventures between the two nations.

The Institute is governed by a Board of Governors, which reports to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Alberta.

The programs offered by the China Institute include:

The China Institute also provides information to people at the University regarding external opportunities such as internship openings in the Embassy of Canada in Beijing or the China-Canada Scholars' Exchange Programme.

The events organized by the China Institute include the 3rd Canada-China Economic Cooperation Conference and numerous lectures on topics such as the study of Chinese literature and China's macro-economic management and fiscal policy.

Staff at the China Institute also collect China-related energy news, analyses, and documents from international media sources on a daily basis. This information is then compiled into an archives of energy news.
