University Cup winner leads by example
To hear his student residents talk, it would seem University Cup winner Dr Alan Thomson, a highly regarded instructor and research specialist in gastroenterology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, has it all. What makes this professor of medicine stand out is his patience and compassion. He takes time to carefully explain procedures not only to his students, but also to patients. In short, he's the kind of man who leads by example and changes people in the process.

University Cup winner doesn’t keep office hours – his door is always open
The University Cup was presented to Dr Mike Belosevic for his nineteen years of top-notch teaching and research. Belosevic credits his love of the classroom to his own mentors; a handful of "very enthusiastic" teachers at the University of Manitoba and McGill University, where he took his education, as well as colleagues at the U of A. "They were always available for questions." It's a policy he goes by today—there are no “student hours”. The door to his office is always open, regardless of the time of day. And there is no such thing as a dumb question.

The University Cup, established in 1995, is the highest honour this University can bestow on a member of its academic staff and is granted only to those individuals who have achieved outstanding distinction in each of the areas of scholarly research, teaching, service to the University, and service to the community at large. Thus, the recipient of the University Cup is a leader whose scholarly work has merited international attention; whose teaching and student supervision ability is highly esteemed by colleagues and students alike as exceptional; and who has earned outstanding regard from the community. In brief, the University Cup is intended to provide incentive, encouragement, and guidance for others to significantly contribute to their fields.
Award recipients are recognized at the annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning. They receive a monetary award of $5,000 and a replica of the University Cup, and their names are engraved on the base of the original cup.
The Cup itself is a sterling silver soup tureen that was used in the Athabasca Hall dining room. It bears the crest of the University and is mounted on a base made from a tree grown on campus. The name of the Cup and winners of the award are engraved on plaques on the base of the Cup.
The selection committee consists of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the Vice-Provost, the Vice-President (Academic) of the Students' Union, the Vice-President (Academic) of the Graduate Students' Association, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and a previous winner of the Cup.
Nominations may be submitted by current or past students, faculty members, Deans or Chairs to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). The significance attached to this award by the University community in the future will depend on the quality and stature of the winners.
Nominators play a crucial role in ensuring that the candidates considered are the most accomplished members of the University and that the letters of support give appropriate testimony to nominees' achievements.
Any full-time member of the academic teaching staff with 20 years of service as a faculty member in a university community and at least 10 years of service as a faculty member at the University of Alberta may be nominated. The University Cup is a capstone career award. Faculty members who are or will be retired at the time the award is conferred are not eligible for this award.
