Teaching Excellence

Dr. Lorne Tyrrell

The University of Alberta is strongly committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. To celebrate the excellence of its faculty members in these areas, the University of Alberta offers several important faculty awards, including the Henry Marshall Tory Chairs, Vargo Teaching Chairs, the University Cup, and the McCalla Professorships. The University of Alberta also recognizes outstanding teaching achievements of faculty members by conferring awards on a regular basis. Among these awards are the Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the William Hardy Alexander Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Additional awards include the Alan Blizzard Teaching Award, developed by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) to stimulate and reward collaboration in teaching and to encourage and disseminate the scholarship of teaching, and the SALUTE, developed in 1997 by Students' Council to promote and encourage excellence in teaching by recognizing faculty members who demonstrate outstanding contributions in their roles as undergraduate instructors at the University of Alberta.
