Direct industry benefit from research chair activities
Improved productivity and reduced operational costs using uniquely designed computer programs are the aims of a research chair in computer process control. The NSERC/Matrikon/ASRA Senior Industrial Research Chair in Computer Process Control will be held by Sirish Shah, a chemical engineering professor. Dr Shah is recognized for his research into methods to automate, optimize, and monitor manufacturing processes so that they continue to operate in the most economically efficient manner.

NSERC Industrial Research Chairs are jointly funded by NSERC and industry. They were established to assist universities in building on existing strengths to achieve the critical mass needed for major research endeavors in science and engineering. The appointments are for five years and are renewable for another five if progress is satisfactory and industrial support continues. Industrial Research Chairs are expected to focus their activities on developing research in fields that have not yet been developed in Canadian universities but for which there is an important industrial need. Chairs are also to involve graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in their research, thus providing an enhanced training environment. Since 1995, the University of Alberta has been awarded the most NSERC Industrial Research Chairs of any Canadian university.
