NSERC Doctoral Prizes

NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) announced the winners of its annual prizes for top graduating doctoral researchers in science or engineering. A national jury selected the medalists from the best PhD graduates nominated by universities across Canada. Each winner receives a $5,000 cash prize and a silver medal from NSERC. University of Alberta grad student Yrui Leontiev received the award, for his complex thesis titled "A type system for an object-oriented database programming language."

NSERC Doctoral Prizes are awarded annually in recognition of high quality research conducted by students completing their doctoral degrees in science and engineering at Canadian universities. Awards are based on the quality of the doctoral research, the student's potential for a research career, and the significance of the student's contribution to knowledge, as well as the manner in which the results have been communicated. Four awards are made annually across Canada.
