Ernest McCoy
Ernest McCoy received his BSc and MD from the University of Alberta in 1947 and 1949, respectively. McCoy specialized in Pediatrics, and in 1971, became Head of the University of Alberta Department of Pediatrics. He co-founded the Northern Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation, which is today the Stollery Children's Hospital. McCoy's research on Down syndrome has been widely published. After becoming a professor emeritus in the Department of Pediatrics, McCoy focused his efforts on the Greenpeace Children of Chernobyl Project in 1990. He helped doctors in Ukraine to improve their medical education, either by coming to Canada for instruction, or by attending classes held in Ukraine by Canadian doctors. He has also been involved with the National Down Syndrome Society.McCoy is a recipient of the University of Alberta Distinguished Alumni Award.
