Alex McCalla

Alex F. McCalla, 1961 BSc(Ag), 1963 MA, is highly regarded for his research in international trade. His work has been extensively published, and its importance has been recognized by the American Agricultural Economics Association. He is a Fellow of both the American Agricultural Economics Association and the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society, and he was awarded an honorary doctorate from McGill University. He has served the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) for more than 20 years and served as chair of the board of trustees of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre.

Throughout his distinguished academic career, McCalla has been associated with the University of California at Davis. While advancing through the professorial ranks, he was appointed dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at age 32 and later was the founding dean of the Graduate School of Management. When he elected to retire from active teaching in 1994, he became the director of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department of the World Bank where he worked to revitalize the World Bank's commitment to rural development.

McCalla is a 2004 recipient of the University of Alberta Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award.
