Paul T. Davenport (1989–1994)

Paul T. Davenport received a BA Honours (with Great Distinction) in Economics from Stanford University and an MA and PhD from the University of Toronto. He was a professor of economics at McGill University from 1973 to 1989 and Vice-Principal for Planning and Computer Services from 1986 to 1989.

In 1989, Dr Davenport became the tenth President of the University of Alberta. He held this position until 1994 when he left to become President of the University of Western Ontario. Dr Davenport's term has been extended for a second time and he expects to remain President of the University of Western Ontario until 2009.

Dr Davenport's research is in economics, particularly productivity growth, fiscal federalism, and knowledge-based economy; he has published widely on these topics. He has also supervised over 20 graduate student theses. Davenport is active in the broader academic and governmental communities and has served on numerous boards and committees. He has received three honorary degrees and, in 2001, he was appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur de France (Knight of the Legion of Honor of France). He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002.
