Centre for Student Development

Girl reading

From Orientation to Convocation, the Centre for Student Development (CSD) has a variety of services and programs that are designed to help students enjoy their social and academic experiences at the University of Alberta.

Major services offered by CSD are Campus Ambassadors, Orientation, MUGS, and From Backpack to Briefcase.

Campus Ambassadors

Students walking

Powered by approximately 95 student volunteers, Campus Ambassadors runs three separate programs: Campus Tours, the First Year Initiative (FYI), and Open House. It is a joint venture between Students' Union and the Office of the Registrar and Student Awards.

Campus Tours is a year-round tour and public relations service that is available for individual or group visits. Common areas of the campus are covered in all tours, plus customized tours can be created to accommodate specific areas of interest.

Students at convocation

First Year Initiative provides grade eleven and grade twelve students with the opportunity to see what it is like to be a first year university student. Each FYI participant is paired with a current U of A student. The U of A student spends an entire day with the FYI participant and mentors him or her on university academics, services, and student life.

Each year, the University of Alberta hosts a massive Open House so that students can explore and discover what their potential could be if they attended one of Canada's top universities.

Orientation

Students in St. Joseph?s College

CSD runs three Orientation programs for students coming from high school, transfer and mature students, and parents.

With over 100 buildings, 35,000 students, and 50 city blocks, navigating the ins and outs of university life can be daunting. Orientation teaches students about policies, grading, the ONEcard, Campus Computing ID, WebCT, U-Pass, and much more.

MUGS

Student gathering

My Undergraduate Groups (MUGS) help participants become comfortable with campus life. Each MUG includes students from the same faculty and two group leaders. As helpful resources, group leaders can assist participants in resolving questions or problems. MUGS meet as a social group and as a study group. Additionally, MUGS facilitates a myriad of workshops and seminars.

From Backpack to Briefcase

From Backpack to Briefcase helps students in their last year of university by providing them with a range of information on topics such as Convocation, paying back student loans, benefits of the Alumni Association, planning for another degree, and travel and work opportunities for recent graduates.
