Mick Price, Agricultural, Food & Nutrition Science
2004 University Cup

One of the highlights of the September 10, 2004 Celebration of Teaching and Learning was the presentation of the University Cup to Dr Mick Price, a professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science. An award intended to recognize a senior professor whose career reflects excellence in both teaching and research, the University Cup recognized Price's work in studying livestock growth and meat production and his priority to enhance the long-term profitability and sustainability of farms.

Born on his family's farm near Herefordshire, England, during the World World II, Price assumed that after high school, he'd settle into a life on the farm. It was a chance meeting with his headmaster from high a few years later, however, that led Price to a scholarship to attend an agriculture program at University College London in what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in southern Africa. From there, Price went on to a graduate program at the University of New England in Australia where he eventually earned his PhD and was offered a full-time faculty position.

Price, however, did not accept, believing he ought to do a year of post-doctoral work elsewhere before settling into a position in Australia. That decision led him to complete a year of post-doctoral work at the University of Alberta, after which he was offered a faculty position. He's been with the University of Alberta ever since.

A past winner of other prestigious teaching honours, including a national 3M Teaching Fellowship and a University of Alberta Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Price estimates that in the three decades he's been with the University, he has taught and supervised over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
