Ezra Moss
Ezra Henry Moss was born April 11, 1892 in Devizes, Ontario to parents Emeline (Switzer) and William Moss. Educated at the University of Toronto, he earned a BA (1916), an MA (1920), and a PhD (1925). He completed additional course work at the Universities of Chicago (1922) and Michigan (1928).A junior demonstrator of botany at the University of Toronto in 1915, Moss first joined the University of Alberta in 1920 as a Fellow in botany. He went on to serve the University as a lecturer of botany (1921-26), an associate professor of botany (1934-38), acting head of the Department of Botany (1935-36), and professor and head of the Department of Botany (1938-57). Named a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta in 1957, Moss was a sessional lecturer at the University of Western Ontario the following year.
During World War I, Moss served in the 5th Canadian Division of the Canadian Signal Corps (1916-18) and was attached to the 10th Brigade Field Artillery (1918-19). He was awarded a Military Medal in 1918.
A Fellow of the Botanical Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ecological Society of America, and the Mycology Society of America, Moss was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1938.
Moss married Margaret McGowan Shipley in 1923; they had two daughters, Marion and Eleanor.
Moss passed away February 8, 1963 in Edmonton, Alberta.
