Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC), encompassing the Academies of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences of Canada, is the country’s oldest and most prestigious scholarly institute. A national academy founded in 1882 by the Right Honourable Marquess of Lorne, then the Governor General of Canada, RSC is dedicated to promotion of exceptional learning, research, and accomplishments in the arts, humanities, and sciences. The Royal Society of Canada is a senior national body of approximately 1700 Fellows—distinguished Canadian scientists and scholars selected by their peers for outstanding contributions to the natural and social sciences and to the humanities.

The Royal Society of Canada is composed of three academies:

Each year, RSC elects ten members to Académie I, twenty to Academy II, and thirty to Academy III. Nominations for Fellowship are peer-reviewed by the current Fellows of RSC. Nominees are judged on the quality of their research and scholarly achievements. In addition, up to six Specially Elected and Foreign Fellows are elected annually for contributions to the objectives of the Society other than by scholarship and research.

The Royal Society of Canada recognizes merit and achievement by electing to its membership distinguished Canadian scholars from all branches of learning who have achieved renown, both nationally and internationally, by publishing learned works or original research in the arts, humanities, and sciences.
