CIHR Distinguished Leadership Award

Mr Peter Lougheed

The CIHR Distinguished Leadership Award, established in 2002 by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, recognizes the outstanding efforts of individuals with a special interest in health research who, through leadership, vision, and commitment, have made a significant contribution to Canada's health research enterprise, from either a national or global perspective.

The CIHR Distinguished Leadership Award consists of a unique medallion of gold plate over sterling silver, embossed with the CIHR logo and name, as well as a framed certificate of recognition.

The Honourable Peter Lougheed, '51 BA, '52 LLB, '86 LLD (Honorary), all from the University of Alberta, is a 2006 recipient of this award. As Alberta's tenth Premier (1971–85), Lougheed focused on control of Alberta's national resources and their development for future generations of Albertans, including improvement of health, research, and recreational facilities in the province. Out of the Heritage Foundation, created for the future support and development of the talent and capacity of young Albertans, grew the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR). Since its creation, AHFMR has funded more than $850 million worth of medical research in Alberta and contributed to Alberta researchers' ability to compete for research funds from other sources.
